Here’s a quick challenge.
Open a new browser tab right now. Type in what you sell, followed by your town or city. Something like “custom cakes Nairobi” or “ladies shoes Westlands” or “laptop repair Mombasa.”
Does your business appear?
If the answer is no — or if you’re not even sure — this blog is for you.
Online invisibility is one of the most expensive problems a Kenyan business can have. Not because it costs money directly, but because of what it silently takes away: customers who were looking for exactly what you sell, couldn’t find you, and bought from someone else instead.
The good news is that it’s fixable. But first, you need to know where the gaps are.
Work through this self-assessment honestly. By the end, you’ll know exactly where your business stands online — and what to do about it.
Check #1: Can People Find You on Google?
Go to Google and search for your business by name. Then search for your product or service category plus your location.
Ask yourself:
- Does my business name appear when I search for it directly?
- Do I appear in the map results (the Google Maps section at the top)?
- Do I show up when I search for what I sell in my area?
- Is there a Google Business Profile with my correct address, hours, and phone number?
What it means if you don’t show up: Google is where buying decisions start. A customer who has never heard of you — but needs exactly what you sell — will only find you if you’re visible in search results. If you’re not there, you simply don’t exist to them.
Most businesses that are invisible on Google have one or more of these problems: no Google Business Profile set up, no website connected to Google Search Console, or a website with no SEO foundation at all.
The fix: Set up and verify your Google Business Profile at business.google.com. It’s free and can get you appearing on Google Maps within days. For deeper Google visibility, your website needs to be connected to Search Console and built with basic SEO in place — something Buzz Online handles as part of every managed store setup.
Check #2: Does Your Website Pass the Mobile Test?
Pull out your phone — not your laptop — and open your website.
Ask yourself:
- Does the page load in under 3 seconds?
- Does everything fit neatly on the screen without zooming or sideways scrolling?
- Can I read the text clearly without pinching to zoom?
- Are the buttons big enough to tap with a finger?
- Does the navigation menu work properly?
- Can I find the product or service I’m looking for within 10 seconds?
What it means if it fails: Over 80% of Kenyans access the internet primarily through their smartphones. If your website breaks, distorts, or crawls on mobile, you are losing the vast majority of your potential customers the moment they click your link.
Worse — Google now ranks websites based on their mobile experience first. A site that performs poorly on mobile will rank lower in search results, making your invisibility problem even worse.
The fix: A properly built website in 2026 is mobile-first by design — meaning it’s built for phones and scales up to desktop, not the other way around. Every Buzz Online managed store is built responsive and tested across multiple screen sizes before launch.
Check #3: Is Your Website Actually Secure?
Look at the address bar when your website is open. Does it show a padlock icon and begin with https://? Or does it show “Not Secure”?
Ask yourself:
- Does my website have a valid SSL certificate?
- Have I received any security warnings from hosting providers?
- Has my website ever been hacked, defaced, or flagged by Google?
- When did someone last run a security scan on my site?
What it means if it fails: A website without SSL shows as “Not Secure” in every browser. Customers see that warning and leave — immediately. It signals that their data (and their M-Pesa details) may not be safe. It also tanks your Google ranking, because Google actively penalizes insecure websites.
For businesses selling online, a security breach can mean customer data is compromised, your site is taken down entirely, or your Google rankings collapse overnight — none of which you’d know about until the damage is already done.
The fix: SSL certificates, malware scanning, security monitoring, and regular updates are included in Buzz Online’s monthly managed store maintenance — so your store is protected without you having to think about it.
Check #4: Can Customers Actually Buy From You Online?
Visit your website as if you were a first-time customer with money to spend.
Ask yourself:
- Can I see clear product listings with prices, photos, and descriptions?
- Is there a way to add items to a cart and checkout?
- Can I pay via M-Pesa without leaving the site or sending money manually?
- Do I know what to do next without having to WhatsApp anyone?
- If I wanted to buy right now, at 10pm on a Sunday, could I complete a purchase without the business owner being online?
What it means if it fails: A website that can’t complete a sale is not an e-commerce store — it’s a digital brochure. And a brochure doesn’t pay rent.
The most common gaps here are: no payment gateway integration (customers have to WhatsApp for till numbers), no product pricing displayed (the dreaded “inbox for price”), no clear call to action, and no checkout flow that a non-technical customer can navigate without help.
Every one of these gaps is a sale that walks away.
The fix: A proper e-commerce store has M-Pesa integration built in, clear product pages with pricing and photos, and a checkout process that any customer can complete independently. This is the foundation of every store Buzz Online builds.
Check #5: Is Anyone Actually Visiting Your Website?
Log into Google Analytics (or ask your developer to pull the data). If you don’t have Google Analytics installed — that’s already a red flag.
Ask yourself:
- How many people visited my website last month?
- Where are they coming from — Google, social media, direct?
- Which pages are they landing on?
- How long are they staying, and where are they leaving?
- Is the number growing month on month, or is it flat?
What it means if it fails: Traffic is the lifeblood of an online store. A beautiful website with zero visitors is the online equivalent of a shop in a building nobody walks past. Without traffic data, you have no idea whether your marketing is working, where your customers are coming from, or what’s driving — or killing — your sales.
Many Kenyan businesses have websites but no analytics installed. They’re making decisions completely blind.
The fix: Google Analytics and Google Search Console should be connected to every website from day one. Buzz Online sets up both as standard, and monitors performance monthly as part of the managed store package.
Check #6: What Does Your Social Media Presence Say About You?
Search your business name on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.
Ask yourself:
- Are my profiles complete — profile photo, cover image, bio, contact details, website link?
- When did I last post? (If it’s been more than two weeks, that’s a problem.)
- Do my posts look professional and consistent, or scattered and irregular?
- Is there a clear link from my social media profiles back to my website or online store?
- Would a first-time visitor trust my business based on what they see?
What it means if it fails: Social media is often the first place a potential customer goes after hearing about your business. An incomplete, inactive, or inconsistent social media presence destroys credibility before you’ve had a chance to make a sale.
It also means you’re not driving any of that social traffic back to your website — where the actual sale should happen.
The fix: Complete, active, professionally set up social media profiles that link back to your store. Buzz Online sets up Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X, and LinkedIn profiles as part of every managed store package.
So — How Invisible Are You?
Count how many of the 6 checks above revealed a gap in your online presence.
0-1 gaps: You’re in good shape. Focus on consistency and growth.
2-3 gaps: You’re partially visible but leaving real money on the table. Prioritise fixing the gaps that directly affect buying — mobile experience, checkout, and Google visibility.
4-6 gaps: Your business is largely invisible online. Customers who could be buying from you right now simply cannot find you, trust you, or buy from you. This needs to change — and the sooner the better.
The Fastest Way to Fix All of It at Once
You could tackle each gap individually — hiring different people for SEO, security, design, payment integration, analytics, and social media. Or you could have one team handle everything, set it up correctly from the start, and maintain it every single month so it never slips again.
That’s exactly what Buzz Online Agency’s managed e-commerce solution does.
One package. One team. Everything covered — from the day your store launches to every month that follows.
No invisible websites. No broken mobile experience. No missing M-Pesa integration. No security gaps. No flying blind without analytics. Just a professional, fully managed online store that works for your business 24 hours a day.
